For all the WW2 History Buffs out there...

What is the most important battle of WW2 and why? Please note, this is including all theatres of war.

Wow....tough one. I would have to say Bastogne because it opened the major roadways in the area and helped to boost morale of the Allies.

From http://www.peachmountain.com/5star/Other_WWIIOverview.asp:
"Stalingrad

To me, Stalingrad is the greatest battle of the war. What would the Soviets really have lost by losing Stalingrad? Prestige? The war wouldn't have been over for them. They still had thousands of miles into which to retreat and conduct partisan operations, etc.

Besides, in the unlikely even that the Soviets were to have lost Stalingrad, the US was developing the atomic bomb to drop on Germany (not Japan), developing B-29 and B-36 bombers to be able to bomb Germany directly from the US, etc.

No, Stalingrad was only important if the Germans were to have lost - which they did. From Stalingrad on, the Soviets knew they had a chance, and the Germans knew they could be defeated and even destroyed. The psychological tables had turned.

I think that Stalingrad is much more important than other battles because it is the most important battle on the most important front of the war. Just remember, the Soviets killed about 80% of all of the Germans who were killed in the war. It was in Russia that Germany was defeated. "

Stalingrad was probably the most important, in the European theater, since that was "arguably" the turning point in the Soviet-Nazi conflict. From then on, Nazis were backpedaling.

I think it was Pearl Harbour, if you consider it a battle, because it brought America into the war. It also revealed that we were not invinsible or untouchable.

like my avatar??? GOOD this is a real unit that was recently sent overseas so you BETTER support them!!!! :)

To be technical, we weren't in the war at that time :D , but it does have major importance, and you make a good point.

However, what's more important, a "turning point" battle or a battle that sets off a war? Pearl Harbor could even be less considered a battle, since it was more just a raid/bombing.

Difficult choice. I'd go with Stalingrad because it stopped the German advance into the USSR, which put the Soviets on offense afterwards and later helped them capture the Germans in Berlin, surrounding them with the Americans on the west and the Russians on the east. It also, obviously, stopped the Germans capturing Asia.

Normandy would be my second choice, Midway my third.
