Imaginary things.

Throughout all the world's history the one thing which really fascinated me (besieds the creation of life) is how imaginary things influenced civilizations. For example dragons; in every civilization in the world there is the belief that some type of dragon species existed and the names they gave this 'creature' had similiar meanings too like the eye, strength, danger. Another example is the great figure God. Billions of people have been killed in the name of God, even today the terrorists are attacking us (9/11) because we don't believe in their God. It just amazes me at how things like this have influenced the world's histroy and how it shapes our lives today. What do you think?

You are mistaken with the reason for the attacks on 9/11. The attacks were because we left Afghanistan with little to no government the first time we were there. That's why Al-Queda attacked us. Not believing in the same God was, however, a influncing factor used by Al-Queda and others to attack the US for not only our views and way of living, but as revenge for previous acts.

Yes Al-Queda attacked us for different reasons but he used the figure God to tell his followers what they are doing is right, that this is what God wants. That is the part which I find interesting is that there are people willing to kill by sacrificing themselves because of the belief that the figure God wants that. Do you get what i mean?

Yeah, I see what you mean. What really intrests me is the mythology surrounding a whole bunch of diffrent cultures, and how it can be so similar even when it's created in compleatly diffrent geographic locations. For examle, there are a ton of similarities between the Greek/Roman myths and Norse mythology.
What's also really neat is that stories of creatures (like you mentioned earlier) such as unicorns, phenioxes (?), dragons, elves, and so on, are found all over the world....

On a seprate note...

Have you heard of the Pisa Bird? I'll post more information on it later, but it's basically this monster that Lewis and Clark spotted in present day Grafton, Illinios. There is a painting on the Great River Road- IL Route 3 near Alton, Il on the side of a bluff.

From the journal of Father Jacques Marquette

Quote:While skirting some rocks which by their height and length inspired awe, we saw upon one of them two painted monsters which at first made us afraid, and which the boldest savages dare not long rest their eyes. They are as large as a calf, have horns on their heads like those of a deer, a horrible look, red eyes, a beard like a tiger's, a face somewhat like a man's, a body covered with scales, and a tail so long that it winds all around the body, passing above the head and going back between the legs, ending in a fish's tail. Green, red and black are the three colors composing the picture...

The meanings of the colors.
Quote:Each of these colors symbolize something: Red=war and vengeance, Black=death and despair, and Green=hope and triumph over death.

What does Pisa stand for?
Quote:The name "Piasa" originated from Marquette and means "the bird that devours men" or "the bird of the evil spirit" (Illinois Department of Natural Resources).

Story has it that the bird did once live and still lives today. The painting of it that Marquette saw was from Indian Tribes in the area. I have hard from various sources that Marquette had written in his journal that he had personally seen the bird, however I cannot find a source to cite that at this time.

That really is interesting, What. For some reason the discription of that bird sounds really famillar to me, though I know I've never heard of the Piasa before. Maybe I'll remember what it was...
