In today’s society, many students across the country are preparing for careers in the medical field. While preparation for medical school may seem a bit premature, it is vital that you get ready for this large endeavor. Prospective medical students should be chary when choosing classes in high school as well as choosing an undergraduate institution. The following are some tips if you are interested in going into the daunting field of medicine
• Schedule AP science and math classes in your junior and senior years of high school. AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP AB/BC Calculus are great classes to take in high school (pre-med wise). It might be a good idea to drop a history class for a science class and “double up” a year.
• Attempt to volunteer at a hospital or shadow a doctor at a local hospital. This will not only help your resume for colleges, but also help you determine whether medicine is truly your calling. If medicine is not for you, it’s probably a good idea you discovered this in high school rather than in college.
• Financially, medical school will be very difficult for you and your family. Not only do you have to worry about financing a college education, but you must also worry about paying for medical school. Search for a college that will not be too much of a strain in your first four years because medical school will be right around the corner.
• BS/ MD programs are great options for students who are absolutely sure that they want to pursue a career in medicine. Many provide guaranteed admission into medical school. Students finish their basic degree in four years and continue their education at that same school for medical school. Some of these programs are six or seven years which helps students save both time and money. Nonetheless, these programs are very difficult to get into.
Medicine is a fascinating field that will attract many students. If you have a passion for math and science and enjoy having an impact on the lives of many, medicine may be for you. However, you must exert yourself both in and out of the classroom for years. You may not make any money until after you complete 10-15 years of study. I feel I have found my calling and wish students the best of luck in searching for theirs.
