DBQ WRITING TIPS
8-Step Strategy:
1. Read the question three times. Do not move on until you fully understand it.

2. Identify the task by circling the main words. (For example: assess the validity, compare and contrast, evaluate relative importance, analyze the significance, etc.)

3. Ask yourself ?what do I have to prove?? (e.g. Foreign policy is more important than domestic policy).

4. Pay special attention to economic, political, social issues that need to be included.

Thesis: While the US, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, kept with some of its basic expansionist policies like manifest destiny, it greatly departed from these old views with things like international peer pressure and dollar diplomacy.

One of the places we have the clearest views of that "terrible transformation" is the colony of Virginia. In the early years of the colony, many Africans and poor whites -- most of the laborers came from the English working class -- stood on the same ground. Black and white women worked side-by-side in the fields. Black and white men who broke their servant contract were equally punished.
