For approximately two hundred and fifty years, slavery raged on in the United States. Today, people look back on it with humiliation and sadness. Most agree that it was morally wrong, but did the colonists of the seventeenth century have another choice? The colonies were full of plantations, and did not have enough laborers to work them. Wages were rising in England, so there were less indentured servants, plantation owners grew fearful of mutinous former servants, and there weren’t enough workers to toil away at their labor-intensive crops.
