Beware the temptation to dwell too much in the details. For world history purposes, the Romans were indeed a ?phase? of the Mediterranean classical societies, and should be taught and discussed the same way that the classical Persian, Indian, and Chinese empires were taught. Students need to pick up the similarities as well as identify a distinguishing characteristic or two about each of these classical societies.
