They not only worked for the ?Americanization? of immigrants in public schools (and opposed parochial schooling) but also formed clubs or voters? leagues to discuss the failings of municipal government. They delighted in making spectacular exposures of electoral irregularities and large-scale graft. These discoveries led to strident calls for ousting the mayor, often an Irish Catholic, and replacing him with an Anglo-Saxon Protestant reform candidate.
