One of the most argued reasons in favor of GM foods is that without them the world will not be able to feed its growing population. It has been estimated that almost a billion people are going hungry since 2008. The fact is, the world produces enough food for each person to consume 3,000 calories every day. This doesn’t include the food that goes toward feeding livestock, producing ethanol, and other necessities to provide for human needs. Many people would argue that the large food supply is because GM food crops have been successful in increasing the average yields. The opposite was found in the 2008 report from the United Nations International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD).
