Gobbet On the Treaty of Shanyuan The treaty of Shanyuan was a peace treaty made between the Liao (or Kitans) and the Song (Or Sung) in 1005 CE, in the form of sworn letters written and exchanged by the emperors of both dynasties. The letters lay out the conditions of the oath that both sides had to abide by in order to retain peace between each other. I will discuss the reasons behind why each dynasty agreed to the treaty and what it meant for both of them.
