Judaism began 4,000 years ago in Middle East. During that time, people worshipped multiple gods. According to the story in the bible, Abraham decided polytheism was wrong and that there was only one true god. God told Abraham and his family to leave Mesopotamia and move to Canaan. God promised Abraham and his descendants would a great nation in Canaan. Abraham and his family are called Hebrews. Abraham?s grandson Jacob, later known as Israel or ?Champion of God?, had 12 sons whose descendants became the 12 tribes of Israel. Many years later, Hebrews left Canaan because of famine. They moved to Egypt but later on they were forced into slavery.
