In John Knowles novel, A Separate Peace, many of the boys of Devon school transistion into adulthood long before they are ready. The story revolves around two young men, Gene and Finny, who go to a boarding school in New Hampshire during World War 2. Gene changes into adulthood early when he, “had to jump out of the tree…because [Gene] was getting ready for the war.”(16) Gene, instead of studying or playing sports was risking his life to prepare for the war. Every time “[Gene] got [himself] into position to jump, [he] felt a flash of disbelief that [he] was doing anything so perilous.”(26) Gene felt like he might fall off and was scared to jump, but did it for the sake of the war.
