I. In 1649 a “rump” parliament purged of his supporters ordered Charles executed and replaced the monarchy with a republic under the puritan general Oliver Cromwell. He expanded England’s presence overseas and imposed firm control over Ireland and Scotland, but he was as unwilling as the Stuart kings to share power with parliament.
