Native American Agriculture Corn was most important and was developed from a wild grass by hunter-gatherers in 5000 BC Jamestown First permanent English colony in North America. Most of the original settlers died in the winter of 1609. A recurring problem was the Powhatan Confederacy. Tobacco became the key cash crop by 1618, then spread around Virginia and Maryland later. Virginia House of Burgesses The first assembly of elected representatives of English colonists in North America. Helped lead America to democracy. Puritans and Separitists Puritans: those who wanted to purify the Church of England. Established the Massachusetts Bay colony (1629) under John Winthrop. Separatists: Did not believe that the Church of England could be purified and wanted to separate completely.
