The administrators of the new colonies created traditional social order, consisting of a gentry class and an established Church of England. The Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina (1669) set down regulations of a manorial system. (See terms) South Carolina remained a poorly governed and violent-stricken settlement until the 1720?s due to conflicts with Indian slaves. Pennsylvania was a place for Quaker refugees to flee to after persecutions in England occurred.
