Affirmative Action - A policy that requires public and private organizations to take positve steps to overcome the effects of past discrimination against women and minorities, especially in employment and education.
Albany Plan of Union- A plan introduced by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 that aimed at uniting 13 British Colonies for trade, military, and other purposed; never enacted.
Alien- A person who is not a citizen of the country in which he or she lives.
Ambassador- A government official appointed by the head of the nation to represent that nation in diplomatic matters.
Amendment- A change in, or addition to, a constitution or law.
Amnesty- A general pardon offered to a group of individuals for an offense against the government, such as draft evasion during the Vietnam War.
