Roman Republic- ?public possession? 507- 31 BCE sovereign power rests in assemblies. All male citizens eligible to attend. Not a democracy. Included Roman Senate. Roman Senate- advisory council to kings and Republican officials. Real center of power. Self-perpetuating body. Brought together state?s wealth, influence, politics, military. Patron/client relationship- binds individuals and families. Client seeks help and protection. Patron gets support of client who works his land. Inequality accepted. System of mutual benefit. Roman Principate- period following Roman Republic. Same forms of Republic, but realities of power altered. Military dictator ?first among equals?
