I. The Philosophy That Created A Nation A. Introduction -Manifest Destiny was the driving force that changed and expanded America B. Manifest Destiny-The Intangible of American History -American history has a cause and an effect, and can be tied to a date-making it tangible -manifest destiny however cannot be tied to a specific date-it is more like a “movement” C. Coining the Phrase -1845, John L. O'Sullivan gave the movement its name and tried to explain it -he said they have the right to spread through the continent for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federaltive development of self government; like a tree that spreads in the air -manifest destiny was posted on newspapers, and argued by politicians -this was the spark for American expansion
