O'Sullivan gave the movement its name and tried to explain it -he said they have the right to spread through the continent for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federaltive development of self government; like a tree that spreads in the air -manifest destiny was posted on newspapers, and argued by politicians -this was the spark for American expansion
