Alex Wells 10/25/09 2nd Period ?Research on Cry, the Beloved Country Author?s Life He was the founder and president of the Liberal Party. The Liberal Party opposed apartheid and offered a non-racial alternative to government policy. Alan Paton was born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, in the east of South Africa. Paton started enjoying reading at an early age reading classics by writers such as Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, and Rupert Brooke. Paton went to school at the University of Natal, and after graduation he worked as a teacher at Ixopo High School. Paton?s first wife was Dorrie Francis Lusted, but after she died he remarried to his secretary, Anne Hopkins. In 1935 Paton was appointed Principal of the Diepkloof Reformatory for young offenders.
