Irene Rose 2-22-10 1st period Fugitive Slave Acts of 1793 and 1850 The Fugitive Slave Acts of 1793 and 1850 both added tension between the North and South. They affected the nation for nearly a hundred years and caused many innocent people to suffer. The Acts were met by great opposition that finally led to their end. Slavery was a hot topic at the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Southern delegates wanted a law that would protect slavery(1). Delegates from South Carolina looked to use the same system to return runaways that was used to extradite criminals. They were unsuccessful but an agreement was reached.
