FACTS SHEET Kursk Submarine Tragedy The Kursk, one of Russian?s newest cruise missile submarines, had sunk on August 14, 2000. The type of the missile submarine was called the type 949a ?Antey? class by the Russians. It was intended to attack and destroy an aircraft carrier battle group, by using torpedoes, and short range sea skimming cruise missiles. Investigators are not positive about how it happened. Their recent discovery shows that the crew struggled for life, gasping for oxygen, to fight a blaze that re4ached more than 14,000 degrees. Another discovery shows the HTP, a form of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide was used as a propellant for the torpedo. It then seeped through the rust in the torpedo casing. which caused the chemical explosion
