Maddie Bernard 11/23/10 p. 1 Religion and Politics in Early Christian Europe Religion and Politics played a huge role in Early Christian Europe during the years of 600 ? 1200 AD. During this time Popes in Rome where independent of secular power and the Byzantine Emperor appointed the patriarch of Constantinople. The Byzantine Empire experienced declining relations with the Popes and Princes of Western Europe land and a division between the Latin and Orthodox Church occurred 1054 AD. Conflict was common in Early Christian Europe between Rulers and Religious leaders because they were both considered to be in places of power by the society. The social order looked to these people as leaders and these two entities had conflicting ideals.
