In the story, “Education is my mother and my father” published in The Norton Reader (438), author David Chanoff recounts the survival of thousands of Dinka children and young adults, as they fled southern Sudan in 1987 to eventually find refuge in America 13 years later. The diversities between the culture and lifestyle of the Dinkas, and what they faced upon arrival in America were profound. Author Anthony Burgess provides his view of American culture in 1971 when he wrote “Is America Falling Apart?” (297), upon his return to Italy; after his one year visiting professorship at Princeton University came to an end. Burgess believes the European cultures have better appreciation for life in general, whereas Americans tend to take things for granted.
