Thesis: The earliest civilizations arose in river valleys with the contributions of domesticated plants and animals; these groups had specialized skills that lead to civilization today.
Before Civilization
-Artistic tools, complex socials relations, and sophisticated skills give evidence that culture began to develop.
Food Gathering and Stone Technology
-stone age=stone tools, but also bone, skin, and wood
-stone age=paleolithic (old stone age) and neolithic (new stone age)
-bulk of food was wild vegetables; meat was eaten at feasts
-food was not cooked until 12,500 years ago, proof from clay pots
-women cooked and watched children; men hunted
-lived in groups to defend from predators and divide responsibility but small enough to exhaust food resources/w walking distance.
