Katie Rigotti 2/17/10 Period 2 Railroads in the United States During the 1820's there was great competition between Europe and America for a transportation system, though the main competition came from canals. In the course of the 1830's the American government allowed railroads to be built across the country, granting builders the land no matter what the owner obliged. Through out this time many railroads were built connecting different colonies. These steel and iron tracks made it easier for goods to be exchanged within the country as well as transporting troops.
