Explaining Proliferation: Reasons for interest groups: Cleavages cause for different interests (Divisions based on income and occupation, immigration, race, independence, and religion, and different regions, cultures, and traditions.) We have many opportunities to our government to influence policies, so more groups will seek to exercise that influence. Weakness of political parties leads to numerous interest groups. B. The Birth of Interest Groups: Number of interest groups has increased since 1960. Various interest groups caused many different types of reform organizations. Factors explaining the rise of interest groups: Broad economic developments
