P.S.100 Jessica Bergman 4-510 January 30, 2012 Research Paper For my egg in vinegar experiment, I left a raw egg in apple cider vinegar for 24 hours. After observing what was happening in the plastic cup I removed the egg from the vinegar to find that my hypothesis was correct. The egg had become soft and if you held it up to the light, you can see right through the egg and right at the yoke inside. Also, I noticed that the egg became bigger.

Chapter 12: Chemical Kinetics Focus on the question ? How fast does it happen? More closely we?ll look at the speeds, or rates at which chemical reactions occur The area of chemistry concerned with reaction rates and sequence of steps by which reactions occur is called chemical kinetics Subject of crucial environmental, biological, and economic importance 12.1 Reaction Rates Chemical reactions differ greatly Examples: Combination of Na and Br, occur instantly Rusting of Fe, imperceptibly slow To describe a reaction rate quantitatively Need to specify How fast the concentration of a reactant or product changes per unit time Rate =

Solubility Rules All common compounds of Group I and ammonium ions are soluble. All nitrates, acetates, and chlorates are soluble. All binary compounds of the halogens (other than F) with metals are soluble, except those of Ag, Hg(I), and Pb. Pb halides are soluble in hot water.) All sulfates are soluble, except those of barium, strontium, calcium, lead, silver, and mercury (I). The latter three are slightly soluble. Except for rule 1, carbonates, hydroxides, oxides, silicates, and phosphates are insoluble. Sulfides are insoluble except for calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and ammonium.
