Victory At Yorktown : Timeline
More than 5,000 soldiers under the command of French general Comte de Rochambeau appear in the waters off Newport , Rhode Island. They are subsequently trapped by British Ships. Washington camped just out of New York City, where he could keep a close eye on the British army based in New York commanded by General Clinton, waiting for a second fleet of French ships. He planned to attack Clinton and his army as soon as the fleet arrived from the West Indies. He had quite a while to wait though, considering the fleet did not set sail for America until the summer of 1781. During all of this, he had been following reports of the fighting in the south.
