Summary In Thomas Hardy?s novel, Tess of the d?Urbervilles, the author reveals the cruelty of humans. The protagonist, Tess Durbeyfield is violated by one man and forsaken by another. Tragedy permeates the entire novel, but the tragic finale of the book is brought upon by one character: Alec d?Urberville.
