Whenever you learn a new mental model or idea, it's like the ?software? in your brain gets updated. Suddenly, you can run all of your old data points through a new program. Introduction to the SAT II THE SAT II SUBJECT TESTS ARE CREATED and administered by the College Board and the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the two organizations responsible for the dreaded SAT I (which most people call the SAT). The SAT II Subject Tests were created to act as complements to the SAT I. Whereas the SAT I tests your critical thinking skills by asking math and verbal questions, the SAT II Subject Tests examine your knowledge of a particular subject, such as Physics, Writing, U.S. History, or Biology. The SAT I takes three hours; the Subject Tests take only one hour each. In our opinion, the SAT II Subject Tests are better tests than the SAT I because they cover a definitive topic

?PAGE ? ?PAGE ?1? Chapter 6 ? Civil Rights seq NL1 \r 0 \h Overview Through action in the courts and in the Congress, the African American civil rights movement profoundly changed the nature of political participation by African Americans. In particular, southern African Americans entered the political system, establishing an effective array of interest groups. Another decisive move was the mobilization of northern opinion on behalf of this civil rights movement. Northerners initially viewed civil rights as an unfair contest between southern whites and southern African Americans; that perception changed when court rulings and legislative decisions applied to the north as well as the south. Then northern opposition arose to court-ordered busing and affirmative action programs.

This happened when Charles V?s troops attacked in 1527, thereby ending the Renaissance in Italy. The Hapsburgs (Holy Roman Empire) face many enemies during this time. They fight with the Valois dynasty in France, and must contend with the Muslims. In 1453, the Muslims finally captured Constantinople. ECONOMIC The Medici were the merchant family based in Florence.

The Church, due to the scandals that occurred, lost much of its power, and people began to doubt its ultimate authority.

What is history and why do we study it? History is the effort to reconstruct the past. The past must be understood so we can understand the factors that shape us today. Historians reconstruct the past by posing questions about it and then attempting to answer them by studying primary and secondary sources. Herodotus, the "father of history," joined the two concepts of inquiry and research. Historians must assess the validity and perspective of each source they study.
