What Is Their Meaning? Nathaniel Hawthorne uses a slew of symbols in the Scarlet Letter to show how different Hester and Dimmesdale are from the community they live in. Hawthorne uses the scarlet letter as the most recurring symbol throughout the novel. He also uses nature, such as the forest, rose bush, and meteor, and even uses people -Pearl, the "Black Man", and even Mistress Hibbins.
