1. Initial: The initial situation is when Odysseus gets to the world of the dead, and sacrifices the animals and then feeds their blood to various souls. (Page 133-134: "Perimed?s and Eurylochos held fast the victims, while I drew my sword and dug the pit, a cubit's length along and across. I poured out the drink-offering for All Souls, first with honey and milk, then with the fine wine, and the third time with water, and I sprinkled white barely-meal over it... When I had made prayer and supplication to the company of the dead, I cut he victim's throats over the pit, and the red blood poured out.Then the souls of the dead who had passed away came up in a crowd...")

1. Initial: The initial situation is when Odysseus asks Aiolos for help getting home, and he agrees to help them. (Page 120: "When at last I spoke of leaving, and asked him for help on our way, he was glad to consent, and did everything he could. He gave me the skin of a nine-year ox, which he flayed for us and made into a bag; and in this he bottled up the blustering winds. For Cronion had appointed him to be the manager of the winds, to hold them or to let them go as he liked. On board my ship he tied up the bag with wire of shining silver, so tight that not a breath could blow out.") Reversal:

(Page 107: "'From that place we sailed onward much discouraged but glad to have escaped death, although we had lost good companions...But Zeus Cloudgatherer sent a nor'wester upon our fleet with a night rushed down from the sky. The ships were blown plunging along, the sails were split into shreds and tatters by the violence of the wind. We let down the sails in fear of death, and rowed the bare hulls to shore. 1. Initial: The initial situation is when Odysseus arrives at the palace. and asks for help getting home. (Page 86: '"There Odysseus stood gazing, after all his tribulations.When he had taken it in he crossed the threshold with brisk steps, and entered the hall...'Arete, daughter of divine Rhexenor! I come in my distress, a suppliant to your husband and to your knees.Yes, and to these who sit at meat; may the gods grant them to be happy while they live; and may each have children to inherit his wealth and the honourable place which the people has given him. Now I beseech you to send me home to my native land without delay, for I have long suffered tribulation far from my friends.'") Reversal:

1. Initial: The initial situation is when Odysseus is stuck on Calypso's island, against his will. (Page 64: "He says there's a man here, one of those who were nine years fighting before Priam's town, and the most unlucky of them all. It took them ten years to capture that city: then they set out for home, but on the way they offended Athena, and she raised a bad wind and a heavy sea against them. All his good comrades were drowned, but he as it seems was carried here by winds and waters. That's the man, and the orders are to send him away at once; for it is not his fate to perish in this place...")
The Odyssey Book 4
1. Initial: The initial situation is when Telemachos and his crew arrive at Menelaos's palace. (Pages 40/41) Reversal: The reversal is when Telemachos learns that his father, Odysseus, is being held captive on Calypso's island. (Page 54: "'Odysseus Laertiades, the man of Ithaca! I saw him in an island weeping hot tears, in the house of Calypso the nymph who holds him by force; and he cannot get away to his native land, since he has neither men nor galleys to take over the broad back of the sea.'")
The Odyssey Book 3
1. Initial: Telemachos arrives to Sandy Pylos with Athena. (Page 27: first few paragraphs) Reversal: Nestor tells Telemachos how King Agamemnon died and what happened to his murderer. (Pages: 33-35) Revelation: Nestor tells Telemachos to visit Menelaos. (Page 35: "Go to Menelaos, that is my advice and bidding. He has lately come from abroad, from such places as he could never really except to return from... Beg him yourself to tell you the truth; but he will not deceive you, for he knows what is right and proper.") 2. Personification
