The Conquest of the Far West -?frontier? = place 4 new beginnings, opportunities, wealth, and adventure -Myths were created about the frontier that were not true except for some exceptions -People living in the West relied on the federal government -the idea of the frontier is the land that was unsettled, the west was the last frontier because people felt that once coast to coast was settled, the US would move into the area and populate it? it was a new territory that was not discovered. It was temporary because once settlements came about things became final and change/ challenges/ action began to stop. -Myth= life in the frontier was exciting/ thrilling/ unsettled

Jackson?s Frontier ? and Turner?s Thesis What is a small-scale theory? Small-scale theories are theories that are parts of a larger body of theory that explains specific puzzles. What is a grand scale theory? Grand theory is a wider scale of theory that encourages historians to figure out what part of history is interesting and important, and which part to study. Define the ?Frontier?. A frontier is a large area of unsettled land that creates a border. Why did Turner feel there was no longer a ?frontier? in 1890? Turner felt that the unsettled frontier had so many small, broken up settlements that it was no longer an unsettled frontier. According to Turner, American History up to 1893 had been to a large degree, the history of what? The history of the Great West.

Chapter 26 - The Great West and the Agricultural Revolution I. The Clash of Cultures on the Plains After the Civil War, the Great West was still relatively untamed, wild, full of Indians, bison, and wildlife, and sparsely populated by a few Mormons and Mexicans. As the White settlers began to populate the Great West, the Indians, caught in the middle, increasingly turned against each other, were infected with White man?s diseases, and stuck battling to hunt the few remaining bison that were still ranging around. The Sioux, displaced by Chippewas from the their ancestral lands at the headwaters of the Mississippi in the late 1700s, expanded at the expense of the Crows, Kiowas, and Pawnees, and justified their actions by reasoning that White men had done the same thing to them.

The Era of the ?Common Man? The Jacksonian Period lived up to its characteristics of being the era of the ?common man.? Andrew Jackson allowed the common man an equal chance achieving success through his economic development, political development, and reform movements. During the era of the ?common man? the common man was the the middle class white male. President Andrew Jackson was the first American to come from humble beginnings and to become the President, this personified the idea of the self-made man. Andrew Jackson also personified the common man because he had been born to a family not of means. Both of Jackson?s parents died when he was young and he fended for himself then worked his way into the military then later became the first president not born from wealth.?
