In Les Miserables, an ex-convict named Jean Valjean is determined to create a new life for himself. He was arrested for stealing a loaf of bread and for trying to escape from prison, and not until nineteen years later, he was released. Valjean comes across the town of Digne but as an ex-convict, he couldn?t find a place to stay. Luckily, he meets the bishop of Digne who takes care of Valjean even after hearing stories of his past. Valjean tries to steal from the bishop and leave at night but he was caught by the police. When the bishop was asked if what Valjean took was his, the bishop covered for him and said he gave it to Valjean as a gift. From there, Valjean swore to be an honest man and set out to the town Montreuil-sur-mer with a new name, Madeleine.
