Examine the interest in and the emergence of utopian communities in American society during the early nineteenth century, and discuss the ideas associated with these communities. 3. Explain the emergence of California as the population center on the West Coast in the late 1840s and early 1850s, discuss the experiences of ?the forty-niners,? and explain the integration of California into the national market economy.
