The two paintings I chose are The Jewish Cemetery from Jacob van Ruisdael from 1654-1655 made with oil on canvas, and The Oxbow from Thomas Cole dated 1836 and also made with oil on canvas. I chose these two because despite taking on a seemingly plain subject (landscape), both were able to transform the scene into symbolic imagery with different lessons on faith, salvation, morality, and God as our creator.
