One Calorie increases the temperature of one liter of water by one degree C. One gram of food contains different amount of calories for the different nutrients. They are as follows: 1 gram of fat = 9 calories 1 gram of protein = 4 calories 1 gram of carbohydrates = 4 calories Let?s look at an example. You may think that if you eat 100 grams of food (a little less than 4 ounces), then 30% of that or 30 grams (just over 1 ounce) can be pure fat. WRONG! Remember, Calories, not grams or ounces measure food energy. There is more than one Calorie per gram.
