The Middle Ages 500 ? 1500 CE Main Idea The Middle Ages began after the fall of the Rome Empire and was a result of European peoples' need for protection from attack. Words Worth Knowing Middle Ages ? period in Europe between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance (about 500-1450) Medieval ? having to do with the Middle Ages Dark Ages ? the beginning of the Middle Ages when Europe was often invaded or at war, learning was lost, trade was disrupted, and cities were often abandoned.
