Psychopathology- the scientific study of mental disorders Criteria for Mental Disorders Maladaptive Behavior ? behavior that causes harm by making it difficult to fulfill the normal functions of everyday life. Personal Distress ? a person?s individual perception of his or her own emotional distress. Atypical Behavior ? behavior that deviates from what is considered socially or culturally normal. Violation of Cultural Norms ? behavior that so deviates from what is culturally accepted that it is considered unacceptable and intolerable. Early Theories Abnormal behavior was evil spirits trying to get out. Trephining was often used. Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: the big book of disorders. DSM will classify disorders and describe the symptoms.

Ch 12: Motivation and Work Basic Vocab Motivation- a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior Instinct- complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned Drive-Reduction Theory- the idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need Homeostasis- 1. tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state 2. regulation of any aspect of body chemistry around a particular level Incentives- a positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior. However, it was not until 1906 that a German physician, Dr. Alois Alzheimer, specifically identified a collection of brain cell abnormalities as a disease. One of Dr. Alzheimer?s patients died after years of severe memory problems, confusion and difficulty understanding questions.
