ID# 23 1. The "Triple Entente" in Europe linked Britain (the powerhouse and leader), France, and Russia against the ?Triple Alliance.? 2. The "Triple Alliance? united Germany (the powerhouse and leader), the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Italy against the ?Triple Entente.? 3. Bosnia, a Slavic Austro-Hungarian province in the Balkans, was desired by nationalist Serbians. One such Serbian assassinated Archduke Ferdinand upon his visit to Sarajevo, and as a result the Austrians launched a punitive assault on Serbia. This brought Serbia?s Eastern Orthodox ally Russia in the fight, and thus Germany on behalf of Austria, and the Great War had begun. 4. The Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in the Great War because of connections between their leaders and military.
