Case: Wallace v. Jaffree Background: Ishmael Jaffree was parent of 3 students who were enrolled in the Mobile County, Alabama public school system. On May 28 1982 he sued the Mobile County Public School Board, various school officials, and the minor plaintiff's three teachers. He stated that these defendants were in violation of the First Amendment. He stated that two of his three children had been in classes with daily prayers said in unison amongst the whole class. The children were subject to ostracism amongst their peer group because they chose not to participate. In response to hearing the complaints of his children he had asked on several occasions that the prayers be stopped. No change was made because according to Alabama law, it was legal.
