Looking for work experience? Musing over ways to impress the big universities? Searching for some way to satisfy your desire to be someone of consequence, to be someone who's vital to his/her community, who exemplifies the best of the best? I think I've derived a solution...take a seat, this is big. Volunteer! Get out there! There are limitless possibilities for youth who want to get involved, who want to have a positive impact on the people they're surrounded by. Try the local hospital--sure, their staff is extensive, covering every specialty and accommodating every need, but they're always looking for volunteers! Why? You guys are there solely because you want to be; you're enthusiastic about helping out simply for the sake of helping out, for making some nurse's day easier, or for sharing some of your zest for life with that sickly patient. Volunteers bring extra spirit to a hospital, they are important factors in the administration of care and the facilitation of an environment that stands for recovery and new beginnings.
How about volunteering at a nearby church, synagogue, or mosque? These locations are essential to community well-being just the same as hospitals, for ofcourse...they heal and foster the soul (as cheesy as that sounds). Help clean the grounds and/or organize the food and clothes drives! Most volunteer opportunities have summer sessions, so basically...the time is now! Make a few phone calls, do a few searches on google--where there's a will, there's a way. You'll find yourself much more aware of the world around you, and much more fulfilled in that volunteering is some avenue of real purpose.
Did I mention the exposure you get to fields that may be of interest to you? Or even then, the idea of being surrounded by something you're passionate about? If you want to go into special education, I'm sure there are day-cares that need your extra hours. Perhaps you want to be a veterinarian, no doubt that animal shelter up the street is looking to recruit some help. Maybe you're one of those insane kids who can't pry their hands of a good book--yes, the library bells are ringing! Point being, imagine a world where everyone helped each other out..beautiful, huh?
Get out there!
