Summertime is the perfect time for teenagers to explore new careers and get job experience. Even in this rough economy, teens can still find work and even take some time to volunteer or intern in certain job fields. Summer jobs are a great way to involve oneself in the community and to see what skills sets one may or may not have.
For teenagers who want a summer job the first thing to do is figure out what you want the job to consist of. Being the summer, people usually do not want a job that will take up most of their time. It is also important not to limit or ignore certain choices. A job may not be in a particular field of choice yet they pay more. What most jobs will look for first is a resume. Being a teenager usually means not having a lot of work experience however, any volunteer work, babysitting, positions in clubs, can make for a presentable resume. Once a person has said resume it is important to start passing them out to friends, parents, and classmates and ask them to see if they know of anyone who is looking. Networking is a big part of finding a job. Word of mouth is not the only way, using the internet or looking through ads in the newspaper is a perfect way to find a job. Employers are looking for hardworking, dependable, responsible, honest, flexible, respectful, positive teens that are willing to work. Employers are especially impressed by teens that do their research beforehand for the job they are interested in. All these things are important to keep in mind while presenting one’s self and going on an interview.
There are many places teenagers can go in their own neighborhoods to find a job. Local stores, stores at the mall, small business, fast food places, restaurants, and grocery stores are always looking for helping hands and not just for the summer. Corporate offices often have summer programs and internships. Hotels, resorts, and parks often have their busiest business during summer. Being a counselor at a summer camp is also an easy fun way to spend the summer and make a few extra bucks. The traditional jobs of baby-sitting, mowing the lawn, cleaning pools, never go out of style either. Summer births the opportunity for jobs especially for teens. The options are plentiful and the rewards are pleasing.
