How to use light and water efficiently!

Aug 10, 2009

All my life I have continuously been told to turn off the light and to stop the water from running when I’m not using it, but I haven’t realized until recently how important conserving energy really is! Today, in our not so great economy people are losing jobs and are starting to think of ways to save money. Along with saving money, you can also help your environment by doing the following:

Turn off ALL lights that are not being used. Who needs light during the daytime when you have the good old natural sunshine.

When brushing your teeth, close your running water, only use it when you need it.

Although plugs might not make a big difference, but any plug that is an outlet still has some electricity running through it. Taking out all plugs when not in use can accumulate and save a bit of energy.

Just recently while I was drinking from my Aquarius Spring! Water bottle, I read a fact on it that stated a four-minute shower uses about 20-40 gallons of water! And to think I take at least half-hour showers. A way to save water here would be to stop the shower when your soaping your body, that way you’ll save a couple gallons of water.

Something similar to the shower situation can be done when washing dishes. Turn off the water when you are scrubbing the dishes, then turn it back on when rinsing. If you really want to make a difference, wash dishes in a plugged sink, this way the water won’t run, you’ll save water and get you dishes cleaned.

My mom yelled at me for doing laundry once! What kind of mom yells at a kid for doing a chore? Well, she told me that I should only do laundry when I have a full load of clothes to wash. About three small loads are equal to a full load. Washing all three tiny loads at once will save tons of water and energy! My aunt also told me that washing clothes with cold water over hot will save some energy as well. Who knew?

This doesn’t have anything to do with light and water, but recycling is always a great help for our environment.

I know it’s cliché to say that one person can make all the difference, but it’s definitely true! The more people that help, the more we can do for the place we live in.

Some of these helpful ideas came from Disney Channel’s Friends for Change. It might seem like a kiddy site, but they really have great ideas in which you can help. Just check in on some of their projects and see what you can do to help!
