Gitmo. What do you think? Good policy or bad policy?
I'll go ahead and kick it off.
Bad policy for the following reasons:
1. Increases anti-American sentiment- Clearly, the WOT and GITMO has increased anti-American sentiment around the world. Terrorist attacks in Iraq everyday, and even protestors in the US that don't like the policy.
2. Hurts US credibility- The US is one of the nations that created the Geneva Convention to stop these kind of wartime violations. It sets up a bad example for the rest of the world since the US has somesort of leadership qualities still. If it is okay for the US to torture their POW's, why can't we torture US prisoners??
3. Hurts the WOT- Besides the increases in attacks, we aren't getting viable information from these prisoners. It has been proven that torture does not yield good results or information.
4. Torturing peole is bad- Obviously, torturing someone alone is bad enough, and that alone should be reason enough to shut GITMO down.
5. Shipping prisoners out- The extent of the torture is not happening uniquely in the US, but occurs in Syria, Iraq, and a lot of other nations. The US finds it to be okay just to send off their prisoners to other countires where torture policies are much more lax, and have prisoners tortured there.

Pardon the ingorance, but what IS GITMO?
Ha ha ha ha ha. :D
For a forum mod under current events of all categories, I would expect you to know of GUANTANAMO BAY. This is incredible. How did you become mod? Please, tell me.

I sense some attitude *rawr*
Pardon me if I am not up-to-date on American affairs, it's not my fault if I have a life that includes some things OTHER than history and current events.

Okay. Wow. This is a really engaging debate so far.
GITMO is the shortened version of Guantanamo Bay. Do a www.google.com search for GITMO. Stuff on Guantanamo Bay will pop up.

Oh, and, I am sorry people aren't aware of one of the biggest violations US morality.

i'm sure a lot might have heard of it but not know it when its referred to as GITMO. And maybe i'm wrong but it seems like you're having an attitude because we don't know what GITMO is. And u still haven't explained the meaning of WOT.
EJ
BIGD10, surely you don't exept us all to know about "GITMO" as much as you do.
Perhaps you've got the misconseption that to be a mod or admin here you have to be a true history conniseur, which is not true.
Anyway, I hope you can get a good debate going on with someone else who knows about "GITMO".
I am going to try to make this all as clear as possible.
1) GITMO=Guantanamo Bay- I'll get to what that is shortly
2)WOT= War on Terrorism
3) Guantanamo Bay is a detention center in Cuba that the US uses for detaining "enemy combatants" and interrogatting them. I'll get to these interrogation methods a little bit later. See, under the label of "enemy combatants", Bush can just detain these suspected terrorists without (w/o) charging them. This is obviously bad. We can't just go around and snatch up people, US citizens or not, and say that is okay, because we are protecting ourselves.
4) Lets look at these interrogation methods real quick. If you want, go ahead and do a Google search for "guantanamo bay torture." You will find several news publications that have done storys on prisoners at GITMO that have suffered torture. Recently, copies of the Quran, the holy book of Muslims, was defaced in front of them. WoMEN have touched the men and have had, what the detainees were told to be menstral blood rubbed in their faces. They have had to stand on their knees in neck high water and in a room that is only slightly higher than their head. Again, this is only a brief list...Don't disagree with me. It is the truth.
5) This is bad for a lot of reasons.
a)Hurts our credibility- People see what the US is doing and feel they can do the same. Also, it is against the Geneva Convention, which the US helped found.
b) It is racist- Obvious implications.
c) Torture- Another obvious one.
This is a brief summary.
