While we strive to provide the most comprehensive notes for as many high school textbooks as possible, there are certainly going to be some that we miss. Drop us a note and let us know which textbooks you need. Be sure to include which edition of the textbook you are using! If we see enough demand, we'll do whatever we can to get those notes up on the site for you!
Hmm, gun control huh? Remember Argentina, people. When they made everyone give up their guns, crime in the country skyrocketed, all because the criminals still had the guns (go figure, they didn't give them up) and they knew that none of the citizens had any, their inhibitions were gone. Don't take our guns away!
Umm right to bear arms?

United States v. Cruikshank
Quote:In this case, the high court made the following statement: "The right [claimed in this case] is that of 'bearing arms for a lawful purpose.'
And....
Quote:A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Bearing arms for an UNlawful purpose is clearly against the law... Therefore their response makes perfect sense.

The beauty of the constitution is that it was designed to be flexible enough to adapt to changes in the United States. Therefore, while supplying a militia is no longer necessary to the security of a free state, the basic principle of self defense remains (as well as hunting and sport purposes also covered by the even more basic principle of the 'right to bear arms'.)

Then again that depends on how you view the constitution, from a federalist point of view or anti-deferalist.
Whether the founding fathers intended every line to be taken literally or not, the point is that the constitution still functions as a basic foundation of law and order after more than 200 years and the US would not be where it is at had every line been taken literally. (One might also note that the US government has never viewed the constitution in a literal sense, otherwise we would not have censorship on TV and anyone could buy a gun.)

But then again it has.. Most great debates in American history were sparked by this..
