for it said in previous post that the price for the death penalty higher than the price to keep a man in jail for life. if thats true we need to change our methods. Also there isn't much of a drastic contrast between states with or without the death penalty because murders are dumb as rocks or finds the rewards outweigh the dangers

The reason that the death peanlty cost so much today is so it can be done in what is considered a "humane" manner. The chemicals used to carry out the execution are very expensive. There is no blood or gore and that comforts those who make the decesions to have the indvidual excuted even though the effects are the same. (Plese note that I am saying this not based on my own opinions or assumptions but from a show i saw on the history channel a while back regarding the topic.)

I love that we fight for the rights of muderers. Though I suppose it IS consistant. As we legalize murdering younger people, we're going to need our rights.

matters your definition of a murderer and if the person was falsley accused and if they are truley murders they are "unhealthy" and the burden of society to correct or deal with

I have a question which I'm really, genuinely curious about: What does it matter if the punishment is cruel? It's not like they had no choice--unless they were poor and, (in the most extreme cases), needed to resort to violence and other dark means to survive. Besides, it's like we're comforting other criminals: "Don't worry--if you get caught, we promise you won't feel a thing."

Though I would understand that it would comfort their families more. However, I would be ashamed if my son or daughter ever did something to deserve the death penalty.

Goodness, all this talk of ole' sparky and the death penalty and punishing evil makes me think of The Green Mile. It's a good book; everyone should read it. ^_^

Although I think it would be a great idea to bring Madame Guillotine back into commission, the United States would never go back to something like that because... well, let's face it, it's old-fashioned and barbaric. And while it would act as more of a deterrant and be more cost-efficient, for the US to announce to the world that we were going back to such better, less costly methods as the electric chair, or hanging, would be like shouting an expletive at the top of your lungs during the president's state of the union address. It would be beneath our dignity; we think ourselves too civilized for that.

But gah! If you make the choice to commit a crime bad enough to deserve the death sentence, your rights to a humane death should be forfeit. Well, that's what I think anyway...

When I was younger I used to believe in the old "eye for an eye" scenario. Sometimes I wonder if that would be the fair thing for some of the sickos in this world. I don't think it is fair for a mass murderer to get lethal injection. Think of all the pain/torture that the victims might have gone through. I can't believe that the government would allow that criminal to have such a humane and painless death. I don't see the fairness in that!

I agree with some of the other comments. Obviously if you made the decision to commit the crime, you made the decision to take the punishment.

More money goes into the litigation and all the trials before the death penalty is administered. The process is actually not that expensive. There are statistics that show that it's actually cheaper to keep an inmate than to spend all that money on the trials.

I believe that the death penalty shouldn't be administered, since who are we to decide who gets to live or die? The death penalty also makes the state a murderer. I think it would be a lot harder to live out your life with all the guilt of something you do. Death just seems like an escape. But I do think that the process leading up to the administration of the death penalty is effective, because the finality of the moment makes inmates come to terms with what they did.
