She commits sins and only lives for money and the ability to manipulate other people. It seems that she commits evil just because it is in her nature. Throughout the whole book she seems to be truly evil but towards the end Steinbeck hints at something else. Samuel Hamilton in contrast to Cathy is happy and good because he lives his life like his parents taught him.
