Stamps, Arkansas Stamps is the place Maya grew up with her grandmother. Her grandmother owned the only black store in Stamps and supplied workers with food. The setting of the book had a connection with the tone because where she lived it was very racist and she lived among many whites. This made one of the major themes of the book which was the way Maya had to deal with racism and tried to stop it. This also helped show her tone which was kind of angry towards the whites for treating her family so poorly.
