By the fifth century B.C., fuel shortages had become common, and much of the forest in many parts of Greece was depleted of fire wood. As local supplies diminished, it became necessary to import wood from farther away. Olive groves became a source of fuel which was made into charcoal for burning, reducing a valuable resource. By the fourth century B.C., the city of Athens had banned the use of olive wood for fuel. The ancient Greeks and romans experience an energy crisis in their urban environment and turning to solar energy they moved toward today we call sustainability
